DEU/Saxony/Dresden: (Copyright © Rainer Weisflog +49171/6254657) The Golden Horseman on Neustaedter Markt may not be the most artistically valuable monument in Dresden, but it is the most famous. It shows Augustus the Strong (Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony and at the same time King Augustus II of Poland) in the posture of a Caesar in Roman scale armor on a cuirassed horse - looking into the main street. The equestrian statue survived the night of the bombing in February 1945 and was stored in a rock cellar in Pillnitz. In 1956, after restoration with 200 g of gold leaf, this symbol of Dresden returned to Neustaedter Markt on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary celebrations. In the background is the late baroque Dresden Frauenkirche, which has been resurrected from the ruins. It is the new tourist highlight in the Saxon metropolis, the monumental domed building towers over the city. From 1838 to 1841, the master builder Gottfried Semper (18031879) erected a new royal court theater, which, however, fell victim to a fire on September 21, 1869.Gottfried Semper soon designed a second building, which was built on Theaterplatz from 1871 to 1878 under the direction of his eldest son Manfred Semper (18381913). The theater building has a magnificent interior. Above the portal is a bronze panther quadriga with Dionysus and Ariadne by Johannes Schilling. The west façade of the rear stage is adorned with the Saxon coat of arms, the figures of Love and Justice and a head by Gottfried Semper. Next to the entrance are sculptures of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, and in the side niches of the façade are sculptures of William Shakespeare, Sophocles, Molière and Euripides. This second building fell victim to the air raid on Dresden during the night of terror on February 13, 1945.After the Second World War, 19461955 security work and conceptual studies 19681976 prepared the reconstruction. On June 24, 1977, the foundation stone was laid and reconstruction began under the direction of chief architect Wolfgang Hänsch. To mark the 40th anniversary of the destruction, the Semperoper was symbolically reopened on February 13, 1985 with Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischuetz - the opera that had closed the opera house on August 31, 1944.Although it was already a state opera house, the opera was also given the official title of Saxon State Opera after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
