Pilgrimage travel in Saxony
===========================

Soul-searching and self-reflection on Saxony's pilgrimage routes
----------------------------------------------------------------

For centuries, pilgrimages offered devout believers an opportunity to make amends to God for wrongs they had committed. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and the tomb of the Apostle James in Spain's Santiago de Compostela were the most important and prestigious destinations, which often only wealthy “penitents” could reach.

Although the Church’s influence on modern life is waning, going on a pilgrimage has been experiencing a renaissance for years – as is the case on the numerous Way of St James (Camino de Santiago) routes. Minimal comforts and plenty of time on your own are the hallmarks of these contemplative walking holidays, which many people deliberately choose as a break from the stresses of everyday life. Explore some of the most beautiful sections of well-known pilgrimage routes that pass through Saxony and find your own path to contemplation.
