Directions

**Stage 1 (** approx. 11.5 km / 4 hours)From Liebethal (Pirna) to Stadt Wehlen
This stage of the Malerweg should be easy to complete with a dog.

**Stage 2** (approx. 13.8 km / 5.5 hrs)
From Stadt Wehlen to Hohnstein
Bypass the Wolfsschlucht via the Hohnstein nature trail.

**Stage 3 (** 14.0 km / 5.5 hrs)
From Hohnstein to Altendorf
This stage of the Malerweg is also easily manageable with a dog.

**Stage 4 (** 19 km / 7.5 hrs)
From Altendorf to the Neumannmühle
From Altendorf, descend through the Dorfbachklamm gorge and take the left fork. This provides an easy hike to the Ostrauer Mühle. The Malerweg leads uphill via the Mühlweg and the Bauweg to the Elbleitenweg in the Schrammsteine. You can bypass the Jägersteig ascent via the Elbleitenweg and Zeughausweg. The stage ends at the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall, where you’ll find a connection to the Kirnitzschtalbahn.

**Stage 5 (** 13.6 km / 7 hrs)
From the Neumannmühle to Schmilka
Hiking with a dog is permitted on this stage.

**Stage 6** (17.6 km / 7 hrs)
From Schmilka to Kurort Gohrisch
On**Stage 6** as well, the only difficulty for your four-legged companion is on the Gohrischstein. To avoid the iron ladders, it’s recommended to take a detour around the Gohrisch, which is possible in both directions.

**Stage 7 (** 17.3 km / 6.5 hours)
From Kurort Gohrisch to Weißig
From Kurort Gohrisch, the Muselweg, the Jagdsteig, the Königsweg, and the Alte Schulweg lead hiking enthusiasts to Pfaffendorf. To climb the Paffenstein, you should choose an alternative to the “Nadelöhr” ascent route at this point. Once you reach the top of the Paffenstein, both hikers and their dogs can enjoy a view of the legendary Barbarine, a landmark of Saxon Switzerland. To head toward Quirl, you can descend via the Klammweg. On the northeast side of the Quirl, there is a large, accessible cave called the Diebeshöhle, which is well worth exploring. The nearby Latzweg trail leads to the foot of Königstein Fortress, which is worth visiting even with a dog—though you should plan to allow plenty of time.

**Stage 8** (13.6 km / 5 hrs.)
From Weißig to Pirna
On the final stage of the Malerweg, you can bypass the Rauenstein massif via the forest trail. This takes you to Wehlen-Pötzscha and Naundorf. In the center of Naundorf, the Malerweg leads to the Königsnase via former quarries and on to Obervogelgesang. Here, you can board the S-Bahn. From there, follow the Elbe Cycle Route toward Pirna, then turn right onto the Canalettoweg, which leads all the way to Pirna’s city center.
