description: "The round trip, which is about 15 km in length, will take you past some delightful points of interest in and around Geyer. Cycle through our beautiful municipal forest and visit the sights in the town centre. For example, spanning seven floors, the Turmmuseum is one of the highest and most beautiful tower museums in Germany. Not far away is the Lotterhof, a unique example of Renaissance architecture in the Ore Mountains. In addition, visitors will be amazed by the sink-hole/collapse shaft, the symbol of Geyer and a natural monument reminding us of past mining activity here. At the Altmarkt you will find a historical milepost, as well as a bakery that begins offering soft serve ice cream in June, a tourist information office with library, pizza facilities, and a newly designed square with water features and benches to rest on. In the wild and romantic Greifenbachtal valley, the route leads you past the ski jump complex, where Eric Frenzel, Olympic champion and world champion in Nordic combined, once got his first taste of skiing. You will also encounter many old witnesses to the town’s mining days. Head to the Greifenbach reservoir for a fitting end to your excursion, perhaps swimming at the sandy beach, pedal boating, playing mini golf or at the adventure playground."

Directions

You can start your tour at the Greifenbach reservoir, for example, and travel in an anticlockwise direction. Your legs are still fresh at this point, so you can tackle the gentle but steady ascent through the forest to the highest point of the tour (at about 5 km) right at the beginning. At the gnarled beech tree, turn left and enjoy the slight slope to the idyllic Heideteich pond (construction work spring/summer 2019). Continue on secondary roads to the town centre. Gliding gently downhill at the Lotterhof and on the Bingeweg (take a detour to the sink-hole here, approx. 500 m away), as well as down Ehrenfriedersdorfer Strasse past the Netto-Markt, you descend into the wild and romantic Greifenbachtal valley. Along the Greifenbach stream, the route runs slightly uphill to the Greifenbachstauweiher reservoir. The “Sandhusenringel” round tour can be navigated in either direction. There are many access points and short-cuts. To add stops to your tour, please use the local and national signs.By the way: What are “Sandhusen”? With the decline of the mining industry in the Ore Mountains, other sources of income had to be sought. In addition to bobbin lace-making and the passementerie industry, the sale of abrasive sand ‒ a by-product of the gravel pits in the area ‒ became popular in Geyer. The children who went off to sell this sand (usually stored in their trouser pockets) were nicknamed “Sandhusn”. This nickname is still used today for the residents of Geyer.
