Directions

The starting point is the Stadt Wehlen train station. After a short ferry ride, you’ll reach the old town and continue on to the market square. The Elbe ferry has been documented since the 15th century and still connects Pötzscha, on the left bank of the Elbe, with the town center. The market square features several notable landmarks: the Protestant church, a new building from 1883, the market fountain, and flood marks on the surrounding houses. A short distance further on is the “Habe,” a historic riverside bulwark that once served as protection against ice drifts on the Elbe.

From the market square, follow the Malerweg uphill to Wehlen Castle. The complex was first mentioned in 1269 as “castrum Wylyn.” Among the preserved features are remnants of the curtain wall and the northern bastion, the “Trommel.” A new observation tower was opened in 2025 and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Elbe Valley.

After the last few steps, turn right first and then immediately right again onto the Steinrücken. This narrow path offers a small view of the Elbe and the rooftops of Stadt Wehlen along the way.

At the next fork, keep left, then shortly afterward turn left again onto the road leading into the Wehlener Grund. The descent continues to the Grundbach stream, which—as in the neighboring valleys—often carries very little water.

The return route continues over the Schlossberg, which you leave by descending the stairs on the right. At the bottom, you reach the Basteiweg, which you follow to the left. Turn left once more to return to the market square, then continue on to the ferry and finally to the train station.
