Bäckerei Zieger - Meißner Fummel
A famous specialty is still baked here today in the Zieger confectionery, the Meissen Fummel. According to tradition, Augustus the Strong had the wafer-thin fummel made. This was because Saxon couriers regularly traveled between Dresden and Meissen, transporting Meissen porcelain and breaking it too often, as they were very fond of Meissen wine. As a result, the Elector ordered the bakers' guild in Meissen to produce an easily breakable pastry. From then on, they had to carry the pastries with them on their journey and present them intact on arrival.
