#1 Elbe Cycle Route

First the imposing rocky scenery of Saxon Switzerland, then the charming Elbe Valley with its beautiful towns of Pirna, Dresden, Radebeul, Meissen and Torgau, with vineyards, castles, wine-growing villages and countless cosy picnic spots right by the river: for many, the approximately 180 kilometres between Schöna and Dommitzsch are the most beautiful stretch of the entire Elbe Cycle Route.

It is not surprising that the Elbe Cycle Route has repeatedly been named Germany’s most popular long-distance cycle route, most recently in the2025 Cycle Tourism Analysis of the German Cycling Association. All of this makes the Elbe Cycle Route the star among Saxony’s cycle routes.

Many accommodation providers cater to cyclists, and there is an extensive public transport network along the river, allowing touring cyclists to plan their stages flexibly.

#2 Oder-Neisse Cycle Route

The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route takes you through tranquil riverside landscapes brimming with history and nature. Between Zittau and Bad Muskau, you’ll follow the blue ribbon of the Neisse, passing through picturesque villages and experiencing a botanical highlight in the form of Muskau Park/Park Mużakowski, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The route ranked 15 in the 2025 Cycle Tourism Analysis of Germany’s most popular long-distance cycle routes – and rightly so: the route is mostly flat, well signposted throughout and full of little discoveries. Ideal for anyone who wants to unwind whilst cycling and experience history, nature and landscape gardening along the German-Polish border.

#3 Spree Cycle Route

The Spree Cycle Route traces the Spree River’s fascinating history from its source in idyllic Upper Lusatian hills all the way to Saxony's neighbouring state Brandenburg. On its Saxony stretch, it winds through forests, pond-dotted landscapes and the picturesque old town of Bautzen, offerig plenty of opportunities for moments of tranquillity and regional highlights.

On the way, the Sorbian villages with their half-timbered houses are particularly charming. Anyone wishing to combine scenery and culture will find the perfect blend of activity, enjoyment of nature and regional charm here.

#4 Mulde Cycle Route

Two rivers, one experience: following the course of two rivers, the Freiberg and Zwickau Mulde, you’ll discover Saxony through its history and unspoilt nature.

Between Zwickau, Rochlitz and Colditz, the route leads through river valleys, past castles, mills and small towns steeped in history. Sometimes gentle, sometimes slightly hilly, the Mulde Cycle Route is a delight for keen cyclists and culture lovers alike.

Ideal for couples or those who enjoy culture, exercise and lovely breaks in cafés.

#5 New Lakeland Cycle Route

Lake Markkleeberg, Lake Störmthal and Lake Cospuden – these are just three of the nine lakes you’ll visit on the New Lakeland Cycle Route through the beautiful lakeside landscape near Leipzig. It’s only a few minutes’ cycle from the Saxon city to Lake Cospuden. This route, which is almost 100 km long, is particularly charming in summer.

The region has developed into a diverse leisure and recreation area: whether you’re relaxing on the sand, white-water rafting at the canoe park, cooling off in the crystal-clear water or enjoying the thrills of the rollercoaster at Belantis theme park. Between Cospudener and Zwenkauer Lakes, you’ll find plenty of places to visit along the way – and, of course, there’s culture on offer too. Find more information on the lakes here.

#6 Seenland Cycle Route

This route is all about water: over a distance of around 190 kilometres, you’ll see how a unique lake landscape is emerging from a former lignite mining area. The Seenland Cycle Route connects over 16 lakes, taking you past beaches, viewing towers and harbours.

Perfectly maintained, flat and relaxed – ideal for families or groups of friends. A swim, a picnic or a sundowner by the lake? No problem! A real highlight for anyone who wants to combine active holidays with leisurely fun.

#7 Obstland Cycle Route

Cycling through Saxony`s largest fruit-growing region

Fancy a tasty trip? The Obstland Cycle Route in the Leipzig and Central Saxony region takes you through Saxony’s fruit-growing heartland, past lush apple trees and gleaming pear trees, juicy plums, strawberries and much more – depending on the season, of course. Between the villages of Dürrweitzschen, Mügeln and Leisnig, you’ll cycle past sprawling orchards and through places steeped in history and culture.

Depending on how much time you have, you can explore the route as a circular loop or in three separate sections – “Fruit Country Today”, “History of Fruit Growing” or “Spiritual Aspects of Fruits”. This way, you’ll experience Saxony’s largest contiguous fruit-growing region in all its facets.

Obstland Cycle Route facts and figures

  • Start/Finish: Circular route through the fruit-growing region between Wurzen and Grimma

  • Total length: approx. 58 km

  • Difficulty: easy

  • Best time to visit: April/May (flowering season) or August/September (harvest season)

  • Top attractions: ruins of Nimbschen Monastery, Mildenstein Castle, the Mügeln railway station geoportal, farm shops and farmers’ markets

  • Suitable for families, connoisseurs, e-bike riders with an interest in local produce and cuisine

#8 Frog Cycle Path

Explore the land of a thousand ponds

Winding its way through ponds, woods and quiet villages, the Frog Cycle Path meanders leisurely through the UNESCO Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve – one of Germany’s most biodiverse regions. On this circular route, which is around 260 kilometres long, you’ll discover idyllic pond landscapes, rare waterbirds and historic half-timbered houses in Sorbian villages.

Perfect for families and leisurely travellers who appreciate nature and culture in equal measure. Don't forget to pack your binoculars and swimming gear – there are viewing towers, rest areas and tranquil swimming spots along the way.

  • Start/Finish: Circular route from/to Hoyerswerda (through Upper Lusatian heathland and pond landscape)

  • Total length: approx. 264 km

#9 Musicians’ Cycle Route

“Musikantenradweg”: cycling through a world of craftsmanship

On the 115 kilometre long Musicians’ Cycle Route, you’ll pass through the “Musicon Valley”, Saxony's renowned musical instrument-making region, where musical instruments have been made for 350 years.

Music lovers can enjoy a fascinating cycle tour of the museums along the way. Starting from Klingenthal, you’ll discover the 350-year history of musical instrument making in the Vogtland region across more than 100 workshops, learn more about the way of life in Vogtland villages in days gone by, or unwind in the hot springs of the Saxon State Spas in Bad Brambach.

#10 Stoneman Miriquidi Road

2 countries, 13 checkpoints, 4,900 metres of elevation gain

With its nine peaks, the Stoneman Miriquid in the Ore Mountains is one of the most spectacular MTB routes in Germany. Since 2018, there has also been a variant for road and touring cyclists, known as Stoneman Miriquidi Road. The route invites you to experience the Saxon-Bohemian low mountain range landscape on tarmac mountain roads.

The circuit is around 290 kilometres long and, with an elevation gain of around 4,900 metres, promises challenging climbs and exhilarating descents. Whilst professionals tackle the tour – with its 13 checkpoints – in a single day, those keen to enjoy the panoramic views tend to allow three days. All in all, a real outdoor adventure for mountain lovers!

The choice is yours: will you first marvel at the panoramic view of Dresden’s old town with the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) und the Semper Opera, or will you cycle straight downstream towards Meissen to uncover the secrets of porcelain?

Practical tips for your cycling holiday

  • Prepare your Elbe Cycle Route adventure with the official Elbe Cycle Route guide, providing you with all the essential information about the route, places of interest and places to stop for refreshments. You’ll also find an overview of cycle-friendly accommodation right along the route – handy for spontaneous stops or carefully planned stages. This way, you’ll have everything you need to hand and can set off on your tour with peace of mind.
     

  • Use Bett+Bike accommodation along your chosen route. These accommodation providers offer secure bike storage, tools for minor repairs and often information about the region too. Perfect if you’re travelling flexibly and value good service. The hosts know their way around and are happy to give you tips for your next stage of the journey.

  • Weather playing up? No problem! If the weather isn’t on your side, Saxony’s towns and cities offer exciting alternatives: along the Elbe Cycle Route, you’ll find Dresden with its splendid Church of Our Lady and Zwinger, Meissen with its famous State Porcelain Manufactory and Torgau, the city of the Reformation. 

    Along the New Lakeland Cycle Route or the Obstland Cycle Route, Leipzig – the city of music and creativity – awaits with its museums, musical delights and culture. 

    In the east, you’ll discover Bad Muskau with the Muskau Park/Park Mużakowski UNESCO World Heritage site, Rakotz Bridge and Görlitz’s old town – all of which can be perfectly combined with the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route.

  • The Röder Cycle Route is packed with highlights: At Rammenau Baroque Castle, you can wander through the salons like a king or queen, admire the exquisite porcelain or listen to a concert. And there are another four palaces to be explored on the route. The Baroque Palace Gardens at Zabeltitz, with their magnificent avenues and  Lustwäldchen (pleasure grove), invite you to take a leisurely stroll. A visit to the Heinrich Zille Museum in Radeburg will introduce you to the art of this town’s most famous son. Our tip: stop off at the famous brewery in Radeberg – and treat yourself to a cold drink to round off the day.

  • The 180 kilometre Saxony stretch section of the Elbe Cycle Route has a special charm: along superbly developed routes, you’ll experience the spectacular rock formations of Saxon Switzerland, pass by Elbe castles such as Eckberg and Albrechtsberg and cycle towards Dresden’s famous old town skyline. Near Meissen, you’ll pass through a wine-growing region – be sure to sample the fine wines!

  • On the Mulde Cycle Route, you’ll be spoilt for choice: you can start with the Zwickau Mulde stretch in the Vogtland region, or the Freiberg Mulde one in the Eastern Ore Mountains. At Colditz, the two branches of the Mulde merge to form the unified Mulde. Don’t miss visiting Colditz Castle whilst you’re there! All three routes are sure to delight you: deep valleys, rolling hills, idyllic riverside landscapes and vast floodplains await you.

  • In the past, it was the miners of the open-cast mines who would wave hello. Today, it’s cyclists out on a discovery tour: between Dresden and Berlin, a water-rich landscape featuring more than 20 new lakes is taking shape. The Seenland Cycle Route runs from Lake Großräschen in the north to Lake Bärwalder in the south of the Lusatian Lakeland. Don’t miss out on this tour along the water.

  • The Zschopau Valley Cycle Route runs alongside the “Pearl of all Saxon rivers”. It starts in Oberwiesenthal and takes you along the Zschopau River to Döbeln. The Ore Mountains are at their most beautiful here: steep cliffs, wide river meadows and spectacular views await you. Numerous palaces and castles line the route. Be sure to visit Annaberg-Buchholz with its mining heritage and its UNESCO World Heritage sites.

  • Our next waterside cycling route follows the Spree River through beech forests, past half-timbered houses and on into the heathland of Upper Lusatia. The Spree Cycle Route is regarded as the twin of the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route and is just as attractive. It begins at the river’s source in Kottmar, enables you to enjoy the Körse thermal baths near Kirschau and leads into the Lusatian Lakeland. Cycle along the river to Brandenburg – or linger on the shores of the lakes.

  • Dune forests, wet meadows, moors – the entire UNESCO Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve is a paradise for frogs. And for anyone interested in rare plant and animal species. Designed as a circular route, the Frog Cycle Route stretches for 264 kilometres through a sparsely populated area. You’ll also pass through Bad Muskau, with its park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
