We embark on a discovery tour through one of the most beautiful districts of Leipzig: the Music Quarter. The Music Quarter was Leipzig's most prestigious residential area around 1900, shining with magnificent buildings from the Historicism and Art Nouveau styles. The Music Quarter quickly became Leipzig's most distinguished residential neighborhood at the beginning of the 20th century. Here, industrialists, bankers, government officials, publishers, and artists settled. The first concert hall for the Gewandhaus Orchestra gave the quarter its name. We will also show you the former Reichsgericht building, the Mendelssohn Ufer as part of the Leipzig Music Trail, and the new building of the Humanities Center of the University. The walk ends at the magnificent University Library, which we will visit. The Bibliotheca Albertina opened its doors in the splendid building on Beethovenstraße in 1891. Arwed Rossbach designed a representative building that reflects the self-image of the old and renowned Leipzig University. The building was severely damaged during the war and was two-thirds destroyed. It was rebuilt by 2002 and adapted to the new requirements of a modern library operation. During the tour, the university library will be presented with its history, architectural decoration, and book collection. To avoid disturbing the readers' tranquility, a visit to the reading rooms is not possible.
