A hike that takes you in the footsteps of Casper David Friedrich to the time of early Romanticism.

The “Enhanced Landscape Tharandt” corresponded to the new ideas influenced by the Enlightenment of a landscape whose found naturalness was enhanced by careful human interventions. This new understanding of nature was a conscious departure from the courtly park designs of the Baroque.

The “Enhanced Landscape Tharandt” arose in the period of early Romanticism and sensibility, starting around 1792. It holds a special place compared to all other early such garden designs:

  • In Tharandt there is already a medieval castle ruin, while in the other landscape parks artificial ruins were built in.
  • The “Enhanced Landscape” included the place Tharandt itself, including its nearby natural surroundings.
  • In Tharandt, for the first time, the lower nobility and the enlightened middle class, including the city’s citizens, became creators and preservers of their “Enhanced Landscape”.

Directions

On our hike, we set out in search of former viewpoints and sight lines. The path leads us over the Kirchsteig to the Mountain Church “Zum Heiligen Kreuz”. At the castle ruin we enjoy the panoramic view over the three Tharandt valleys. Afterwards we walk down to the Castle Pond View, the most frequent motif of Romantic painters. We follow the path into the Weißeritz valley slope nature reserve with the former “Holy Halls” and climb up to Mauerhammer with Heinrich's Corner and Cotta's Grave. The way back leads us past the Forest Botanical Garden of 1811.
