Directions

The Steinkohlenweg is a signposted circular hiking trail 18 km long. It connects the towns of Oelsnitz/Erzgeb., Lugau, Hohndorf and Gersdorf. You will encounter traces of the former coal mining industry all along this route. The highlight of the tour is a visit to the coal forest in the Oelsnitz/Erzgeb. mining museum. The coal forest, which has been recreated using fossil finds, impressively recreates the flora of the Carboniferous period, 300 million years ago, and vividly explains how it became hard coal over the course of time.
