The easy and family-friendly hike leads on the well-developed middle circular path around the 831 m high local mountain of the city Annaberg-Buchholz. The path passes the picturesque Pöhlbergalm on the south slope of the mountain, offering beautiful views of the Pöhlbach valley and the upper Ore Mountains. The striking basalt columns, popularly called "Butter barrels," also lie directly on the path and provide insight into the interesting geology of the mountain.
The route around the Pöhlberg can also be extended by ascending the summit (observation tower, mountain inn). From the middle circular path, several steep trails with varying degrees of difficulty lead up to the summit plateau.
For families, a detour to the city park with a wildlife enclosure and playground at the western foot of the Pöhlberg is also worthwhile.

Directions
From the starting point at the parking lot at the Butter barrels, follow the signs of the Middle Circular Path and Mining Educational Trail on the Pöhlberg (hammer and pick on blue background). After about 400 m, you reach the mountain meadow of the Pöhlbergalm, which invites you to linger, especially on sunny days. The circular path leads from the Pöhlbergalm north into the forest. You cross the ski slope and continue left on the middle circular path, which now climbs a short steep section. On the north side of the Pöhlberg, the basalt columns of the Butter barrels are exposed directly on the circular path. The path then descends past the old bobsleigh track and meets the road of the Pöhlberg ascent (Ernst-Roch-Str.). Turn right here and after about 300 meters you reach the starting point.
