  • Destination: Postplatz with Café Marx and House of the Sorbs
With surprising views of the first ridge of the Upper Lusatian Highlands, you will find monuments on often historic paths and, "naturally," plenty of nature

Along Bautzen's main boulevard, the "Reichenstraße," you pass many sights such as the Jugendstil villa Weigang or the former GDR Stasi prison. Through the nature park, you reach the observatory. Passing it, a path lined with remarkable glacial erratics follows, with a beautiful polish and a nameplate rounding off each. Back on the street, on the left (north of the dog sports field) is the “Russian Column.” The route continues through Rabitz, Daranitz, and Rieschen, then turning right after the village to Weißig. From there, over the first ridge of the Upper Lusatian Highlands, you hike through forest and fields to Pielitz to the "Red Tavern," which still offers accommodation. After a rustic break and refreshment from your backpack, take the meadow path (yellow mark) back toward Bautzen. From Mehltheuer, with the Bautzen panorama in sight, continue over part of the battlefield from May 1813, passing the “Murder Stone (1639),” and return through Jeßnitz, Soculahora to the city. Passing the former hussar barracks and the Red Church, the route leads to Postplatz, for example as a reward with coffee and cake at Café Marx.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Be sure to visit the Old Waterworks. It was once both a defensive tower and a drinking water pump station, and today it is a technical museum. Great view from the observation platform, with impressive functioning technology visible in the lower part!

The former Stasi prison, the Bautzen Memorial, also deserves a visit. It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Fridays even until 8 pm. The introductory film starts every half and full hour in the former garages.... exciting and oppressive at the same time - definitely watch it!
