Fields, gardens, and small streams shape the landscape in the border area between Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. The starting point, however, is a former railway station that recalls the narrow-gauge railway that existed for up to 50 years between Gera and Mumsdorf near Meuselwitz. Today, an association takes care of revitalizing the station and operates a handcar railway.

Directions
The hike starts at the former station building of the narrow-gauge railway line between Gera-Pforten and Wuitz-Mummsdorf, heading towards Pölzig to turn left after about 400 m onto a field path leading to a former windmill and then back to the main road. After about 200 m, you leave it finally on the residential street “Hoher Rain.”
Passing an abandoned sandstone quarry, you reach an orchard meadow with a beautiful view of Pölzig. A narrow path between gardens leads down to the Pölzig biological sewage treatment plant and continues to Unterau at the Pölzig-Bröckau road, which is crossed (detour to Bröckau possible – approx. 600 m).
A field path runs along the edge of a small forest at Eichberg, and on the left, you can see at the confluence of two small streams the source of the “Schnauder,” which flows into the Weiße Elster near Groitzsch. Shortly afterwards, the invisible border to Burgenland district and thus to the state of Saxony-Anhalt is crossed, and uphill, the district Görnitz of Bröckau is reached. On a little-traveled road, you walk over Mühlberg to Hohenkirchen. Passing through the town, a field path leads to the foot/bike path between Pölzig and Sachsenroda. Here you have the option to turn right to return to Pölzig (1 km). The circular path leads left to Sachsenroda, where at a crossroads at the other end of the village, it goes right to Hirschfeld.
About 300 m after the village, a signpost offers the possibility to reach Pölzig early (1.7 km). On the circular route, you continue through fields to Beiersdorf. There you can view the remains of an old stone cross. Now it is not far to the starting point of this hike. On the former railway embankment of the “Wuitz – Mummsdorfer narrow-gauge railway,” the old station of Pölzig is reached.
