In particular, in the Upper Castle you can encounter traces of the rule of the Vögte in the Middle Ages in the residential town of Greiz.

The Culture Trail of the Vögte invites you to a search for traces in the medieval history of the Vögte - an era, however, that only reveals itself in Greiz on a second look. Here, the successors of the Vögte, the Reussen, have left impressive architectural evidence as well as valuable art collections.

The route starts at the Tourist Information, located in the Lower Castle Greiz. First, stroll past the Old Guard to the Summer Palace, which houses the State Book and Copperplate Collection as well as the Satiricum. Concerts also regularly take place here. Then, the Princely Greiz Park invites you to a relaxed walk.

The special feature of the museum in the Upper Castle is the combination of unique historic building fabric from the 12th to the 19th century with interactive history. The permanent exhibition "From the Land of the Vögte to the Principality of Reuss Elder Line" is an experience for the whole family. One of the outstanding highlights of the museum in the Upper Castle is the Romanesque Double Chapel from the 12th century.

The mentioned permanent exhibition continues in the Lower Castle, which was rebuilt in the neoclassical style after the city fire of 1802-09. The princely rooms and the festival hall are masterpieces of noble living culture.

The last stop of the tour is the St. Mary's City Church.

Directions

A nice starting point is the Castle Square on the bank of the White Elster. Now walk left around the Lower Castle, past the Old Guard to the main entrance. At the Tourist Information, you can always get information about sights, leisure activities, or accommodations in the city and surroundings. After visiting the castle museum, take the path again past the Old Guard, keep left at Burgplatz, to go through Brückenstraße and under the bridge of the Elstertal Railway to finally arrive at the Princely Greiz Park.

Take a stroll to the Summer Palace. Afterwards, cross the park to reach Parkgasse at the level of Café Parkschlösschen to return to the city. Behind the Schlossberg, walk up the (Elsterperlen) path to the Upper Castle. Here you should go into the castle interior and visit the museum.

The path now leads down on the city side (Am Schlossberg) into the center to Puschkinplatz (central bus stop) and back to the Lower Castle. Right next to it is also St. Mary's City Church.
