With picturesque views of Thalheim and the Zwönitz valley, this hike is also suitable for families. From May to October, a visit to Rentners Ruh is worthwhile.

Starting at the Thalheim train station, which has regional connections, you hike along the Rentners Ruh on the idyllic and historic Pioneer Path towards Christelgrund. A detour to the idyllic pond in the forest is worthwhile.

The challenging ascent to Flügelhöhe is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Zwönitz valley. Further through the magical forest, you discover romantically wild paths. Along the way, you will repeatedly encounter the damage caused by storm Fabienne in 2018.

Passing numerous shelters and the forest campsite, which can be used by reservation, you enjoy picturesque panoramic views. On the descent into the Drei-Tannen town, you are sure to find one or more dining options that round off your route with regional or international dishes.

Directions

The hike begins at the train station in Thalheim. At the start, you head south towards the miniature exhibition area Rentners Ruh, where a visit lets you learn a piece of the history of the Drei-Tannen town. Past Rentners Ruh, you follow the historic Pioneer Path towards Christelgrund. Don’t be confused by the signs at the railway crossing, but continue following the Pioneer Path. Over the Christelgrund hut, you reach a junction where a detour straight ahead to Christelgrund is possible. The circular route at the junction turns left onto the Flügelweg, where you reach the highest point of the hike upon arriving at the Flügelhöhe hut (551 m above sea level) on the Rabisberg.

Via the Rabishütte, the Waldesruh hut, and the Lohhütte, you pass a forest barbecue area, which can be used by reservation. Then keep left and hike down the forest ridge with a wonderful panoramic view over the Zwöniz valley. To the left, you then reach Gornsdorfer Street and from there descend into the town. Along the way, you also pass the ski slope of the Ski department of SV Tanne Thalheim.

In the small town, enjoy a diverse gastronomic offer and visit the House of Local History, where you learn about the local history, which was especially shaped by the stocking knitting industry.
