Hike from the historic Frohnauer Hammer past Schlettau Castle to the summit plateau of the striking Scheibenberg with its mighty basalt columns.

The route in the heart of the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park rewards the hiker with excellent viewpoints in the beautiful low mountain landscape between Annaberg-Buchholz and Scheibenberg. Directly on the hiking trail, special highlights such as the Frohnauer Hammer, Schlettau Castle, or the organ pipes at the Scheibenberg can be visited. Along the way, several restaurants, cafés and snack bars invite you to refresh and recharge.

The route mostly runs over well-developed, easy paths. The difficult ascent to Scheibenberg via the Zahmsteig on the southern flank of the Tfaelberg can be bypassed via the easier northern route along Bergstraße.

For the return to Annaberg-Buchholz, buses of the RVE or Erzgebirgische Aussichtsbahn trains on selected dates can be used.

Directions

The hike begins at the technical monument Frohnauer Hammer with Germany's oldest blacksmith museum deep in the Sehma valley in Annaberg-Buchholz. From there, the European long-distance trail Eisenach-Budapest (red-white marking EB) leads to the saddle of Frohnauer Höhe. From the starting point, the path follows Poststraße past Frohnauer cemetery and kindergarten. After about 1.5 km, the path branches left to the Teufelskanzel, which you reach shortly. From the Teufelskanzel, there is a lovely view of the historic old town of the mining town Annaberg with its local mountain Pöhlberg. The EB trail continues from the Teufelskanzel along Dahlienweg to the junction with Alte Buchholzer Straße at Heiteren Blick. Here you turn right and follow the EB long-distance trail downhill towards Schlettau. In Schlettau, you cross the Zschopau and reach after a few hundred meters the picturesque Schlettau castle complex.

In Schlettau, the route leads up the market square towards the church where you turn right into Kirchplatz. Shortly after the cemetery, the path crosses the railway tracks of the Schwarzenberg - Annaberg-Buchholz line, served on selected dates by the Erzgebirgische Aussichtsbahn. From now on keep left and continue following the E3 long-distance trail along the forest edge beneath the striking Scheibenberg. Shortly before the Scheibenberg entrance, you reach the B 101, follow it left for 100 meters, then turn right into Am Berg street.

The street leads up to the steep foot of the basalt mountain where the Untere Rundgang is reached on the left. Following the Untere Rundgang, after 500 m you reach the Zahmsteig which leads via many stairs up to the summit plateau. After enjoying the well-deserved beautiful view from the Scheibenberg, the path leads from the guesthouse towards the ski jump facility down into the town of Scheibenberg. Don’t miss taking a close look at the mighty basalt columns of the famous organ pipes during your descent.

The hike follows the street from the mountain into Scheibenberg turning left into August-Bebel-Straße. Follow the street up to the church and turn right into Kirchgasse, which leads shortly to the destination at the market square.

Directly at the market is a bus stop with regular bus connections towards Annaberg-Buchholz.
