On scenic high-altitude paths along picturesque meadows and forests. A demanding day route for ambitious hikers from Annaberg-Buchholz to the Fichtelberg.

This day hike is especially suitable for active hikers with good stamina. From the Frohnauer Hammer in Annaberg-Buchholz, the route leads you along the Firstenweg steadily upward to the summit of the 1215 m high Fichtelberg, where the Ore Mountains lie at your feet. Numerous viewpoints along the path guarantee a magnificent landscape experience in the heart of the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park.

For a comfortable return to Annaberg-Buchholz, you can take the steam trains of the Fichtelbergbahn from the Oberwiesenthal spa town with a transfer to the Erzgebirgsbahn from Cranzahl or, for a faster connection, the line 210 buses Oberwiesenthal-Chemnitz of the RVE. The descent from the Fichtelberg plateau is eased by a cable car, chairlift, or as a special experience, the world's longest Fly-Line.

Directions

From the starting point at Frohnauer Hammer, you hike on the Firstenweg (red-white marking) and, following the Poststraße, pass the Frohnauer Cemetery. After about 1.5 km, turn left towards the Teufelskanzel, which you will reach shortly. At the rock formation of the Teufelskanzel, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the historic old town of the mining town Annaberg with the local mountain Pöhlberg. Follow the marking of the Firstenweg further over the Dahlienweg to the "Heiteren Blick" and along the Buchholzer forest in the direction of Neu-Amerika.

In Neu-Amerika, cross federal road 101 at the sports ground and follow the path between the sports and training grounds through the forest. At the forest exit, stay on the Firstenweg and turn right. The path now leads you along the ridge between the villages of Sehma and Walthersdorf to the Sehmaer Höhe, from where you have a lovely panoramic view of the basalt table mountains Scheibenberg and Bärenstein. You now cross the road between Sehma and Walthersdorf and cross slightly below the track of the Erzgebirgische Aussichtsbahn, which connects Annaberg-Buchholz and Schwarzenberg on summer weekends.

The Firstenweg again climbs more steeply towards Wolfstein from the beginning of the nearby forest. Now your hike leads you through the woods of the upper Ore Mountains. The hiking trail runs with slight ups and downs past the "Raubmordstein" to the forest inn Siebensäure (open daily from 10:30 a.m., closed Tuesdays), where hungry hikers can take the opportunity to strengthen themselves for the following ascent to the Fichtelberg.

From Siebensäure, continue following the Firstenweg south towards the Fichtelberg. After about 1 km, take the right turn. After another 500 meters, you reach a crossroads where you turn left and follow the Gifthüttenstraße towards the Fichtelberg. Shortly after the shelter "Gifthütte (1005 m)" at the foot of Gifthüttenberg, turn right and cross after 100 meters the intersecting path "Ausrücke." You now hike along the foot of the Fichtelberg along Hirschfalzstraße and gather your strength for the final summit push. After a short time, you cross the young Zschopau; if you turn left at the next intersection towards the Fichtelberg and follow the Reitsteig path, you reach the Fichtelberg summit after one last steep climb.
