The 128-kilometer-long Oberlausitz Mountain Trail winds along the German-Czech border through a centuries-old cultural landscape. Six prominent mountain peaks accompany your path and dominate Upper Lusatia as landmarks. The observation towers offer views as far as the Giant Mountains and the Jizera Mountains. In total, the high-quality long-distance trail covers 2,300 meters of elevation and includes significant places such as the historic Zittau, the innovative textile site Großschönau, the beer town Eibau, and the pottery village Neukirch. Let yourself be enchanted by the diversity of this cultural landscape.
The first stage takes you from Butterberg in Bischofswerda, via the "Granite Village" Demitz-Thumitz, to the pottery village Neukirch.

Directions
Butterberg can be reached on foot from Bischofswerda station in 45 minutes. The path from the station to Butterberg is continuously signposted as a feeder to the beginning of the Oberlausitz Mountain Trail. Finally, you reach Butterberg, with its impressive mountain inn and observation tower.
From the mountain inn, follow the "green stripe" marking.

Trekking backpack (approx. 50 liters) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable footwear, possibly change of shoes/sandals, weather-appropriate and durable clothing in layers, change of clothes, trekking poles, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, mobile phone, maps, travel documents, toiletry bag and travel towel, hand washing detergent and clothesline, optionally camping equipment (tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, cooking equipment), optionally hut equipment.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Neukirch has been the center of Upper Lusatian pottery since 1759. Demonstration workshops allow direct contact with the potters. You can also experience the special features of linen processing. Also worth mentioning is the large number of traditional half-timbered houses typical of the region, where linen was formerly processed as homework.
