Altenberg is best known as a traditional winter sports resort and has a long history of hosting international competitions in bobsled, luge, and biathlon. Cycling is a wonderful way to explore the region’s rich sporting history. This varied tour takes you past the world-famous luge and bobsled track as well as the Biathlon Sparkassen Arena. A special highlight awaits you at the site of the former Biathlon Arena, where the World Championships were held in 1967. Today, the area has been restored to its natural state and is part of a protected nature reserve. In late spring, the area transforms into a vibrant sea of purple broad-leaved orchids—a quiet, striking contrast to its sporting past.

Directions
- Start at the Altenberg train station. Follow the bike path along the B170 toward Dresden to the sports complex. Once there, turn left onto Riesengrundweg and follow it to Hirschsprung. On Talstraße, keep left again and you’ll soon reach the luge and bobsled track. From the entrance to the finish building, the path leads steeply uphill. At “Turn 14,” switch to the other side of the track and stay there until you reach the starting area. Descend on the other side to the middle exit at “Turn 9.” Leave the grounds and follow Bornweg to the intersection. Here, turn left onto Bauweg and follow it until you turn left onto “Staubfreien Weg.” At the next fork, follow Bornweg toward Altenberg. Cross the B170 and follow the road to Schellerhau. After 200 m, you’ll reach the water treatment plant. Here, turn left onto Viehtriftweg. On your left is the site of the former biathlon arena, where the World Championships were held in 1967. Today, this area is a nature reserve. Ride onto the dam crest of the Galgenteich and keep to the right. At the end of the path, turn left onto Schneise 31 and then, on your right, onto the I-Flügel. At the next intersection, keep to the left. Follow Schneise 30 for about 700 m, then turn right to reach the Biathlon Sparkassen-Arena Altenberg. You’ll then return to Altenberg via the K-Flügel, Moorweg, and Alten Zaunhäuser Weg.
