This promising circuit is named after one of Germany's most successful winter sportswomen: Sylke Otto, born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), is one of the most famous female lugers in sporting history. She won two Olympic gold medals (2002 and 2006) in the single-seater, numerous world championships and four overall World Cup victories - making her the most successful female luger of all time. After her second Olympic victory, she was even made an honorary citizen of Oberwiesenthal.
The hike begins in Oberwiesenthal at the valley station of the cable car. From the town center, the trail initially leads downhill and also crosses the tracks of the historic Fichtelbergbahn. After crossing the border into the Czech Republic, the tour leads steadily uphill. At first, there are wonderful views back to Oberwiesenthal and the wide-ranging hills of the Erzgebirge. The path soon disappears into the deep forest before the route leads to the striking Wirbelsteine. This rewarding vantage point offers a view of the low mountain range landscape close to the border.
The trail continues to the even higher Keilberg (Klínovec), the highest mountain in the Bohemian Ore Mountains. At the summit, panoramic views over the Ore Mountains and the Fichtelberg region invite you to enjoy what you have achieved.
The route continues down to Boží Dar, a vast and very distinctive plateau with access to a variety of hiking trails. The route finally leads back to Germany through the birthplace of the famous singer-songwriter Anton Günther.
The final highlight of the tour is the Fichtelberg: at 1,215 m, it is the highest mountain in Saxony. The observation tower offers a fantastic panorama of the entire Ore Mountains and far beyond. After the summit, the well-maintained trail only leads downhill back to the center of Oberwiesenthal.
