The Umgebindehausradweg runs over 115 km from Neukirch/Lausitz to Zittau and celebrates the special folk architecture of the old houses in its route. The Umgebindehäuser, in their abundance, are characteristic of the Upper Lusatian landscape and showcase the impressive craftsmanship of past centuries, reflecting the availability of natural, locally sourced building materials.
Since the spa town Sohland a.d. Spree and thus also the village of Wehrsdorf have a large number of these gems, an additional section of this cycle path has been created, representing a small but eventful "detour."
Coming from Weifa, a district of the municipality Neukirch/Lausitz, you can first take in the quietness of the countryside. After a steep descent, Wehrsdorf is reached and a small stop at the Vetter farm cheese dairy is worthwhile right at the beginning.
In the immediate vicinity, the towering St. Trinity Church, which warmly welcomes guests with its open door, invites one to quiet reflection and rest.
Further along the path, the attentive observer can now discover the Umgebindehäuser, sometimes even adorned with a sundial. In this area, it is worth riding a little slower to experience the various expressions of this distinctive architectural style.
When the elongated valley of the Kaltbach is left behind, the path climbs steeply towards Neuschirgiswalde, where, shortly before reaching the main route, a special view of the small town of Schirgiswalde rewards the effort of the ascent.

Directions
The marked main route is left in the Neukirch district of Weifa, and just before the parking lot at the "Keglerstübchen," cycle to the right towards Wehrsdorf. After a quiet stretch between meadows and fields, the forest is reached, and at a trail junction at the labor memorial—a monument to the arduous construction of the path between Wehrsdorf and Weifa—continue straight ahead and shortly thereafter descend steeply into the village of Wehrsdorf.
Passing the farm cheese dairy, which is worth a visit, the cyclist reaches Lessingstraße. This Lessingstraße is consistently followed and taken into Schirgiswalder Straße. The cyclist then ascends a long stretch over the Wehrsdorf town boundary to Schirgiswalde, over the hilltop, and turns left just before the cemetery to continue uphill on this path until reaching the Neuschirgiswalde district. Here, the asphalted route and thus the main path are reached again. After a short break and an enjoyable view of the small town Schirgiswalde–Kirschau, the Umgebindehausradweg is followed further, turning right.

Additional information
Umgebindehäuser belong to the typical folk architecture of Upper Lusatia and occur only in this region in such numbers. The term "folk architecture" expresses that no famous master builder but craftsmen from our rural region were responsible for the creation of Umgebindehäuser. The craftsmanship of past centuries impresses to this day – natural building materials occurring in Upper Lusatia were used, and so the houses are authentic in their effect in many different sizes.
The name "Umgebindehaus" is derived from its structure: the block chamber forms a completely separate building unit, is surrounded by vertical posts that carry the upper floor and the connecting arches. In the block chambers, the looms rattled during the era of home weaving. Only very few of these witnesses of hard bread-earning times still exist today.
For this reason, in Sohland a.d. Spree alone, with its three districts, there are still 200 of these wonderful houses, most of them lovingly restored and in good condition.
