Besides the four towns, the former water castle on the Göltzsch in Rodewisch and the numerous churches of medieval origin are worth seeing. Museums in Auerbach, Lengenfeld, Falkenstein, and Schöneck convey the history of the region.
Treuen
While little of the medieval castle at the site of the manor in the “Upper Part” is still visible, in the “Lower Part” of the town you find a two-story late Renaissance castle. Characteristic features are the half-timbered structure and the staircase tower with an octagon and curved dome. Concerts and annual castle festivals are very popular.
Rodewisch
On the grounds of the castle island lies the water castle Göltzsch, first mentioned in 1450. Excavations in the 1930s uncovered numerous archaeological finds from the castle. These form the foundation of the museum “Göltzsch” collection in the former manor house, which is especially known for its annual Christmas exhibition. The Renaissance castle built around 1500 still impresses today.
Auerbach
Besides visiting the museum and the Laurentius Church, a historic city tour is recommended. What is the story behind the legendary beer war between Rodewisch and the three-tower town of Auerbach? How did castle lords, citizens, and craftsmen live in earlier times?
Falkenstein
The castle rock — located between the castle and the zoo — marks the site of the medieval Falkenstein castle. The Falkenstein local history museum in the castle presents much valuable information about the local history.
Schöneck
Popular with small visitors is the castle playground at the Alten Söll with a great panoramic view. Few know that this viewing rock was the location of the castle with which the Vögte secured their sphere of influence to the east.

Leave Plauen towards Reichenbach on the B 173. Via the Voigtsgrün junction, you reach the village church in Altensalz—directly on the shore of the Pöhl reservoir. Then continue to the Neuensalz Chapel. After Thoßfell, turn half right towards Treuen. Passing the country inn Waldeck, you reach the town center. Near the town hall around the market, you will find lovingly restored half-timbered and Umgebinde houses. Drive down Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Straße to the right of the town hall and turn left onto Gerberstraße. After only 100 m, turn right towards Schreiersgrün / Veitenhäuser. The Lower Part of Treuen Castle can be found immediately on the right.
Return to Gerberstraße, turn right, and at the roundabout, take the right onto Perlaser Straße. Cross the bypass straight ahead. After Wolfspütz, cross the Göltzsch and turn right towards Lengenfeld. You meet the B 94 and turn right here towards Rodewisch, where you follow the signs to the castle island.
Parallel to B 94, the road leads to Auerbach. Park on the Old Market in front of the Laurentius Church. A short walk takes you to the tourist information, the city museum, and the castle tower, which now houses a restaurant. From here, you have a beautiful view over the town and the Göltzsch valley.
Follow the B 169 to Falkenstein. Park at the former castle (savings bank, local history museum). In the adjacent park, the old Falkenstein castle can be glimpsed from the castle rock.
Continue towards Oelsnitz. After Neustadt, turn left to Schöneck. Behind a small park, turn right towards Schilbach and reach after about 500 m the Alten Söll—the foundation of the old Schöneck castle and today a viewing platform on the balcony of Vogtland.
From Schöneck, our path finally leads to Oelsnitz.

- Getting thereUse the A 72 motorway and take the Plauen-Ost exit coming from Chemnitz, or the Pirk exit coming from Hof. Follow the signs towards the center. From Gera/Greiz or Cheb/Bad Brambach, use the B 92 federal road.
