This short route leads you south of the Zschopau over roots and stones, past witnesses of medieval mining and along the Zschopau.

There are many hiking trails in and around Zschopau, but no route is as varied on a short distance as this one.

From Wildeck Castle, cross the Zschopau bridge and go up the old Marienberger Street to Zschopenberg elementary school. Via the Wurzelweg you reach the K8174 and follow it towards the town until the Steghaus. A narrow path passes the house on the right and leads you directly to the Zschopau. Here, the place at the visitor mine of the Holy Trinity Fundgrube invites you to have a picnic.

Then continue upstream until you reach the ski jumps of the winter sports center "Am Zschopenberg". From there it is only a short walk over Obere Mühlstraße and across the Zschopau bridge back to the castle.

After the route, there is still enough energy left to climb the 144 steps of the keep "Dicker Heinrich" in the castle courtyard of Wildeck Castle. (Museums and tower open according to opening hours).

Directions

The route starts and ends at the Renaissance Wildeck Castle in Zschopau. You start heading south. First, go downhill over the Zschopau bridge, past the monument "Zschaap mei Geeß" and under the railway bridge. Follow the stairs to Anton-Günther-Platz and the Old Marienberger Street to the junction "Wurzelweg" at Zschopenberg elementary school. At the information board, you get an overview of the witnesses of old mining in the southern area of Zschopau. Follow the path into the forest. On the left, the view into the Zschopau valley is worthwhile. At the edge of the forest, the signposting "Wurzelweg" begins. The signs can always be found as stickers. At its end, you reach the district road K8174. Use the sidewalk on the opposite side and walk towards town. Just before the bridge over the Zschopau, on the left is the Steghaus. Go towards it and take the small path directly next to the house to reach the Zschopau. Along the Zschopau, you soon come to the "Holy Trinity Fundgrube." With about 250 m of secured guided paths, it is one of the smaller visitor mines. Tours are possible by prior arrangement (observe the local notice), but the forecourt also invites you to stay.

The route continues along the Zschopau past the boathouse of the canoe club. Finally, you reach the ski jumps of the winter sports center "Am Zschopenberg." At the parking lot, keep left and then turn right onto Schlachthofstraße, going under the railway bridge. Immediately behind the railway bridge, you come onto Obere Mühlstraße. Follow it turning left. At the end of the street, you reach again the monument "Zschaap mei Geeß" and the Zschopau bridge. Straight ahead is the Zschopau train station, right over the bridge back to Wildeck Castle.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

There is nothing more wonderful than a small picnic and briefly cooling your feet in the river. The place at the visitor mine is especially suitable for this.
