Hiking

Saxony is a particularly diverse destination for hikers, as it features a wide variety of landscapes within a small area. From the spectacular Elbe Sandstone Mountains with their bizarre rock formations, through the dense forests of the Ore Mountains, to the volcanic hilltops of Upper Lusatia, Saxony offers a wealth of variety.

You’ll find well-signposted trails to suit every ability, whether you’re planning a challenging day’s hike or simply want to relax and enjoy nature. The infrastructure is considered very well developed; numerous trails hold certifications such as “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland”. Classics such as the Painters' Way or the Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridgeway are a must for hiking enthusiasts. Lace up your boots and discover Saxony’s most beautiful spots at your own pace.

Cycling

The best way to explore Saxony is on two wheels. Well-maintained cycle paths run along the Elbe river, through the Leipzig Lake District or up into the Ore Mountains. You’ll cycle past vineyards, historic old towns such as Dresden or Meissen, and vast lake landscapes – sometimes leisurely, sometimes faster, but always close to nature and culture.

The famous Elbe Cycle Route shows just how varied a tour can be. Those who prefer a more active challenge will find just the thing on the Stoneman Miriquidi Road. Cycling in Saxony means getting out into the open air, taking a deep breath and discovering something new with every turn of the pedals.

Those seeking a sporting challenge will find the perfect route on the Stoneman Miriquidi MTB. At Bikewelt Schöneck, there’s a route for everyone – families, beginners and experienced bikers alike. Road and gravel biking

In Saxony, your road or gravel bike will find exactly the kind of terrain that’s great fun. One moment you’ll be racing along quiet country lanes through the vineyards of the Elbe Valley, the next, the gravel will crunch beneath your tyres as you climb the hills of the Ore Mountains or Upper Lusatia.

The beauty of it is the variety: whether you're taking on iconic routes like the Stoneman Miriquidi Road or the RockHead gravel route, or simply clearing your head on quiet back roads, there's something for every rider.

Swimming and water sports

Long sandy beaches, sunsets against a harbour backdrop and plenty of water sports – Saxony offers you an astonishing amount of space by and on the water. In recent years, a modern waterside landscape has emerged, particularly in the Leipzig New Lake District and the Lusatian Lake District, inviting you to explore.

Instead of old opencast mines, you’ll now find clear lakes, well-developed harbours and wide beaches. Here you can get active or simply enjoy the day on the shore – hassle-free, close by and surrounded by nature.

Winter activities

In winter, Saxony’s low mountain ranges are transformed into areas for skiing and winter hiking. Whether cross-country or downhill skiing, hiking or tobogganing: between the alpine winter sports resorts of Oberwiesenthal and Altenberg in the Ore Mountains or Schöneck in the Vogtland region, the snow-sure Kammloipe trail – rated as an “excellent trail” – or the winter hiking havens in Saxon Switzerland – Saxony is a magnet for active holidaymakers in winter, with or without snow.
